The capital cost is high - £50/60,000 is not unusual for a photo-processing machine. They can be leased but again the monthly cost is high.
The pharmacy must be located in the right position; otherwise it will be a white elephant.
They are susceptible to competition. There are several franchise operations specialising in D & P and Boots has its own outlets.
An additional member of staff is often required to provide the service, thereby adding to overhead costs.
The initial profitability projections usually include a high reliance on sales of photographic sundries. If these do not materialise, then it could be a loss-making venture.
When they break down, they don't earn, therefore service back-up is of paramount importance.
The space taken up could be used to sell other products more profitably.
